Building Relationships with Authors and Employers: A Roundtable

Building a good relationship between the author and editor is an important part of the publication process. There are elements of trust, respect, and collaboration that need to be navigated with care and clear communication. Each relationship is different and will grow over the course of a project. This roundtable brings together Nadine Ryan (moderator), Nicola Campbell, Deanna Reder, and June Scudeler to share some experiences and engage in a conversation with participants about the many aspects of author-editor relationships. Attendees are invited to participate directly in this roundtable discussion; enrolment is limited.


Jónína Kirton, Book Coaching: Getting Started

Join us for a presentation by IEA member Jónína Kirton, followed by a discussion about book coaching. Jonina Kirton is a Red River Métis/Icelandic writer, poet, author, facilitator, and professional book coach. She will share an introduction to the work of book coaching, which is sometimes referred to as substantive or developmental editing.

Roundtable for Emerging Indigenous Editors

April 27, 2021 • 3 p.m. PST

Editorial work can be perplexing to those unfamiliar. How do you take steps in establishing and building on your professional practice? How do you determine your rates and set deadlines? Where can you find mentorship among colleagues? Join IEA members Jazz Cook (moderator), Lisa Frenette, and Nadine Ryan in a roundtable discussion for emerging Indigenous editors. This roundtable will be an opportunity to provide insight from emerging and established professionals and make space for sharing questions, experiences, frustrations, and solutions around topics of interest to emerging Indigenous editors. Attendees are invited to participate directly in this roundtable discussion; enrolment is limited and accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rhonda Kronyk, Marketing and Rate-Setting for Freelancers

May 14, 2021 • 11 a.m. PST

IEA member Rhonda Kronyk will present a wealth of information at this webinar, geared toward emerging Indigenous editors. Rhonda Kronyk is settler/Dene and is an established writer, editor, researcher, and consultant. She is editor of WRITE, the magazine of The Writer’s Union of Canada; an inaugural member of the IEA; and an advocate for Indigenous representation in publishing.
